Backstory:
A while back, I had made my first whiskey bottle lamp; a gift for a friend who is an avid bourbon connoisseur. I had done some research, and came across several whiskey or wine bottle lamps for sale on etsy and elsewhere. There were some that were a traditional table lamp, with a single incandescent light bulb inside a bottle that acted as a lamp shade. Then there were those that had string lights coiled up inside the bottle, which was the direction I was leaning.
However, all of the LED string lamps were battery powered. To me, that was kind of hokey. If I am gifting someone a lamp, they shouldn't need to regularly pay to replace batteries. I know it's probably just a quirk of mine, but to me that's not even a real lamp.
So long story short, I either had to hunt down line voltage LED lights (and I'm not talking those christmas tree style ones, but really "wispy" small LED string lights), or use a plug with a built in step down transformer, which I had on hand.
My lamp consisted of a bottle with the bottom removed atop a wooden base, which was to house a toggle switch. I hadn't given any thought to this, as I assumed a DC toggle switch was just as readily available as a AC toggle switch would be. However, in retrospect, I should have realized that the selection of toggle switches I had remembered seeing on an isle cap at home depot were simply replacements parts for various construction equipment. When inspecting the limited selection there, I didn't find any DC rated switches, only AC. I decided to buy now and ask questions later.
